Button Cell / Watch battery Information

There are three main types of button cell:

Watch batteries

These are normally Silver Oxide 1.55V. They are generally quite small and light with watches being their primary application.

Flat discharge characteristics - A flat discharge curve during discharge supplies a stable voltage until the end of the discharge life.
High-energy density - High-energy density per unit volume provides approx. twice as the amount of energy capacity as button-type alkaline batteries.
Excellent discharge load characteristics - Employing an alkaline electrolyte, the battery features excellent discharge load characteristics. Depending on the composition of the electrolytes, two models are available; (1) a low-drain type for analog watches, and (2) a high-drain type for multi-function watches incorporating an alarm, illumination light, etc.
Superior leakage* resistance - These batteries have excellent leakage resistance, which suppresses the electrolyte from rising up and seeping out. (* Leakage is defined as an unintended escape of liquid from a battery.)

Coin cells (Lithium CR...)

As the name suggests, these batteries often look like coins and are a high energy-density battery containing lithium, organic solvent and other combustable materials. They are powered by Lithium (manganese dioxide lithium) and as a result have a higher voltage than the silver oxide cells. The coin type battery is a small lightweight battery with an operating voltage of 3V and the ability to operate over a wide temperature range. It has a wide range of applications, both for powering devices such as wristwatches and electronic calculators and can be used in all types of electronic devices mainly as memory and RTC backup.

Alkaline button cells

Compact, light and economical alkaline batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.5V

Excellent cost performance - Unlike silver oxide batteries that use the precious metal silver, the alkaline battery features good cost-performance because it uses low-cost manganese dioxide as its active material.
Excellent heavy load characteristics - The Alkaline button cell battery offers excellent heavy load characteristics and employs a separator featuring low internal resistance, good liquid holding properties and high-drain characteristics.
Usable with a wide variety of equipment, ranging from electronic calculators to electric toys.

There are other types of button cells including the rechargeable Manganese Dioxide Lihium, NiMH and Titanium Carbon Lithium Ion models.

Hints & Tips:

These are a primary battery i.e. diposable and cannot be recharged. Charging will lead to overheating, ignition, bursting or fire.
Dont allow the positive and negative terminals to short cicuit.
Never forcibly discharge - Forcibly discharging by means of an external power source or another battery will cause the voltage to fall below 0V (reversing the poles), generating gas inside the battery and leading to overheating, ignition, bursting or fire.
Never expose to heat - Exposing to temperatures in excess of 100C will increase the internal temperature of the battery, leading to swelling, leakage and bursting.
Never expose to open flames - Exposing to flames will cause the lithium metal to melt, causing the battery to explode.
Never disassemble or deform - Disassembly will generate gases with an irritating odor. At this time the lithium in the negative electrode will react with the water in the air, causing the battery to ignite. Deforming the battery could cause the elctrolyte to leak or cause the battery to ignite and burst due to an internal short circuit.
Never Swallow - as with all batteries, keep them out of reach of children. If it is swallowed consult a physician immediately!
Never use batteries of different types together - when using more than one battery together, mixing different types of batteries or old and new batteries could cause them to recharge or discharge excessive electricity due to the differences in voltage and capacity, leading to swelling, ignition, bursting or fire.
Never apply solder directly to the battery - the temperatures generated by doing so could cayse the lithium to melt. Only solder onto tagged batteries.
Avoid storing the battery in direct sunlight or in excessive hot and humid / moist locations.
When disposing of lithium batteries make sure the terminals are covered in cellophane so they are unale to short out.
